Established in 1987, before SBJC was formally founded, the
SBJC Cheder has been, and remains, one of the most important features
of the Community. Rabbinic leadership and teaching is provided by the
Community's Rabbi, Rachel Benjamin.
The aim of the Cheder is to be creative in promoting Jewish
teaching for all generations. Sessions are varied in format, covering
Jewish custom, ritual and ceremony; and Hebrew language teaching for
both children and their parents. SBJC also engages with other local
synagogues to provide additional learning opportunities with the
children.

Teaching at the Cheder follows the standard practice for the
ULPS in continuing for both girls and boys until Kabbalat Torah
(Confirmation) in a child's 15th year if desired. As a constituent
member of the ULPS, SBJC has full access to the facilities provided by
the CJE at its Manor House Centre in Finchley. These include the latest
in educational expertise, equipment and materials. Whilst the teaching
at Cheder does not specifically cover Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, the Community
is delighted to arrange for these - we have had many already.

Our aim is to
contribute and enhance the development of our children by providing a
friendly, warm Jewish learning environment. Rabbi Rachel,
two teachers and two assistants, deliver fun, informative sessions with
many different activities, accompanied by wonderful music and
songs. The programme is varied and provides interest and
enjoyment. Family mornings are incorporated when the whole family
can join in the learning experience.
Each step of our children’s development is catered for from
toddlers to post Bar/Bat Mitzvah, with the option of taking a GCSE in
Religious Studies: Judaism. It is important for our children to
enjoy their time at Cheder as they learn about their Jewish heritage,
the traditions, the history as well as developing their personality,
resulting in well rounded, respectful adults who we can be proud of
– ‘Mensches’.
The Cheder is
held on Sunday mornings during school term time. Most sessions are at
the community's meeting place, Chesham High School, White Hill,
Chesham. More information is available from the Education/Youth
Council Member
