SBJC Activities

We offer regular Friday night and Saturday services, a religion school, and social and community events

SERVICES

We hold a weekly Erev Shabbat service every Friday night at 8pm except on the first Friday of each month when we have a family service (open to all!) at 6pm.  We also hold a Shabbat morning service every other Saturday combining with Religion School during term time.

We hold full high holy day services and we observe all the major festivals with services geared towards families. To mark Pesach and Chanukah, we hold a Chavura, which is an informal community meeting for Jewish celebrations.

While our services always respect Jewish traditions, they remain relaxed with no formal dress code.

Our services have been held on Zoom through the pandemic but we are now running hybrid services. When we are able to meet, it is usually  in Amersham.

Jewish Education

It's a Jewish tradition to foster a love of learning at all ages. We want our children to enjoy exploring their Jewish heritage as they develop into young adults with their own connection to their Judaism.

The journey begins with toddlers at Gan, taking children through Religion School to Bar/Bat Mitzvah at 13 and Kabbalat Torah at 15 or 16 and on to adulthood.

Cheder - Religion School

Our weekly Religion School accepts children from Year 2 (around age 6) and seeks to explore the child's Jewish heritage and identity through to Bar/Bat Mitzvah and beyond.

Once a month we also hold a Jewish-themed craft session for toddlers and pre-school age.  We meet at the same place as our Religion School so that parents and children can  meet with other families and teachers.

Adult Education

We run a varied programme of adult education sessions, in person and online.

We have also run book groups and engaging discussions on contemporary themes and ethical questions.

Conversion and  jewish status

We warmly welcome anyone who sincerely wants to become Jewish. Your journey will start by talking to our Rabbi and joining SBJC as a ‘Friend’ member. From there, converting to Judaism demands substantial commitment, and we’ll be here to support you all the way.

We also support people with Jewish roots but no formal Jewish upbringing to affirm their Jewish identity.

Community and Social Events

SBJC is a visible Jewish presence in our local community, regularly represented at civic and interfaith events.

We also run social events, such as a summer party, Rosh Hashanah tea, a Chanukah trail and a visit to the Rothschilds' Waddesdon Manor.
